What separates the best from everyone else?

Setting goals.

How do Olympic athletes have the ability to work so hard for so long? The answer lies not only in their elite training and lifelong commitment to their sport but also in the formidable force of a clearly defined goal. The journey of an Olympic athlete spans (at least) four intense years, during which they undergo rigorous training, optimize their nutrition, engage in mental preparation, and more; all in pursuit of a singular moment of triumph. Yet...there is a deeper drive that propels their remarkable endurance. They have a clearly defined goal. They do everything based on their ONE event, the Olympics. One of the most important things is to write goals down. Only about 3% of adults write their goals on paper. When you write, you retain the information and you think about it. To be successful, you need a goal (a well defined and thoroughly thought out goal). Failure is the undisciplined path of least resistance. The failure mechanism is triggered by procrastination. Procrastination is the thief in your life. Humans in general are purpose driven. Happiness comes when we are in control. When we have a clear goal of what we are working towards each day. Want to achieve your goals? Here are 5 easy-to-follow steps:

  1. Decide what you truly, deeply, down-to-your-core want. (Ok the "down-to-your-core" is a bit extreme but you get the point.)

  2. Write it down. In a journal, on your phone, in a secret ledger spot...just write it down!

  3. Set a reasonable deadline, allowing enough time to achieve the goal. As they say "Rome was not built in a day"!

  4. Do something every day that moves you 1 step closer to your goal.
