What's that smell?

September 2, 2019

Regularly washing your yoga mat is just as important as regularly washing your yoga clothes! Wiping them down in between practices is great but once in a while they need a deep cleaning to prevent getting stinky. To thoroughly clean, submerge the mat in warm water with a small amount of mild soap (dish soap or hypoallergenic laundry detergent work great). You can do this in your bath tub or even in your washing machine on a gentle cycle. Be sure to rinse completely as any residue of soap will be slippery when you practice. Keep in mind that depending on the thickness and material of your mat, it can take several days to completely air dry. Still detect an odor? Try a little white vinegar to neutralize. Your nose and all your fellow yoga practitioners will thank you!

Want to add a calming smell while cleaning your mat in between washings?

Here is a DIY Mat Cleaner:

  • Small spray bottle (2-4 ounces or so)

  • Distilled or spring water (3/4 of spray bottle)

  • 2 drops of tea tree essential oil

  • 1 drop of lavender essential oil

  • Optional: Witch hazel or white vinegar (fill 1/4 of spray bottle)
