   Many of us local to Philadelphia remember the famous 2002 rant by former 76er Allen Iverson. He played hard, he played every game like it was his last, but when it came to practice, well we knew how he felt about it. Unlike what Allen Iverson believes, I personally believe practice is the most important thing we can do when learning new movement patterns, strength moves and techniques. It takes time to learn how to properly do a hardstyle plank by creating enough tension in the body to hold ourselves up, stable, and strong, and without the hips popping up too high or low back sinking too low. It takes hours of practice. It takes learning from books and mentors to continue to get better at our strength training. I’ve had two movements recently that I’ve had to get help from my coaches and mentors. The first movement, the barbell deadlift. 

   I’ve been deadlifting for years, learning something new and improving my technique over time. I was able to maintain my tension, drive through my hips, and start putting more weight on the bar. I have recently hit a PR and lifted 275#.  My end of summer goal is to lift 300#. Spending enough time with the bar and getting feedback from my coaches, I’m putting myself in the best possible position to reach my goal. 

  One thing to think about… This is a movement that I have been doing for years. I am still a student every single day trying to learn and get better and stronger. This is why being in this field is the absolute best. Not only do I get to help make people stronger, improve their health, but there is always something that I get to learn. Which drives me to be better every single day. Another movement that I recently needed some extra help for was a weighted pull-up. I have a goal of completing the Iron Maiden challenge in March. But, I wasn’t making any progress. How hard could a pull up with weight really be?  I’ve been doing body weight pull-ups for years and I can do 12 in a row.  Shouldn’t a weighted pull-up be just as simple as a body weight pullup?  I was able to easily pull the 35# bell attached to my waist. Why couldn’t I get anything heavier?  It’s called technique, practice, and programming.  I’ve finally been able to do a pull-up with my goal weight of 53#.  It still needs to be cleaned up, but hopefully I will own the movement in the next few weeks with some extra practice.So now that I’ve gone on a rant about my training, what is the point you ask?  

 

  The point is when I opened the doors to our facility in October of 2016, I wanted everyone to know this isn’t your typical “gym” or “training studio.”  You are going to learn more about movement and strength than you ever thought you could.  With practice and consistency, you will be able to do things that you never thought you could do.  You will be able to deadlift, press, squat, and swing more than you ever have in the past and will do it safely, as technique and your safety is our key. We want this to be a place where you feel comfortable and you want to come to. A place where after you go through one of our classes, you feel inspired  and accomplished, not beat up and broken. We want you to make friends and and to be a part of our ANCHOR family. We want you to be excited to practice your new movements, to get stronger every day, and to have fun while doing it.  This is a place for a safe, fun, effective lifestyle change.  We are here to build you a strong base or armor for life.  Whether you are a college athlete, a stay at home mom, coming to us after physical therapy, have a physically active job as a police officer or firefighter, or looking to maintain your independence without cane or walker, we are here to help you build a strong foundation so you can continue with your passion, your love, your careers, without having training hinder you, but only here to help your thrive.  It will take practice.  It will take time, but it will be well worth it.  Whether you want to be able to chase your grandchildren around when you are 80 or be able to get the 50# dog bag out of the store and into the car yourself, that is what we are here to do. To teach you techniques that are safe and effective to improve both your strength and conditioning.  It will take practice and patience, but it will be a healthy lifestyle change.

 

  Not only are we here to help you move and get stronger, but we will be teaming up with local chefs and dietitians to do cooking demonstrations and meal preps in our facility to assist your healthy lifestyle. With a combination of both movement practice and healthy cooking techniques, we promise that you will learn the techniques to be able to change your lifestyle for the better for yourself and your family.  It will take practice, consistency, and time, but will be done in a fun, safe, and happy training environment.  We are here to bring the people of  Kennett Square and surrounding areas, a place that will change your life for the better.  So, unlike Allen Iverson, we believe in practice.  We believe practice will get you to your goals in training and in the kitchen.
